A series of events staring with a youth cycling challenge on Friday 20 August will run through to Sunday 29 August with the Paisley 10K Road Race, making up the Big Active Week.

Councillor Susan McDonald, Renfrewshire Council’s Sports Champion, said: “The Big Active Week is part of the Active Renfrewshire strategy to give people of all ages across Renfrewshire opportunities to get out and get fit and healthy. The range of events taking place shows how much Renfrewshire has to offer no matter what your ability. We hope to see as many people as possible taking part in these events.”
The Youth Cycling Challenge runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Erskine Harbour, Kilpatrick Drive for 10 – 18 year olds. Renfrewshire Council Youth Services are running the event which comprises races for under 12s, 14s and 16s on the Scottish Cycling Circuit Race Championship course, a mobile skatepark for BMX and skateboards and a bike skills challenge. The event is completely free and all bikes, BMX, skateboards and safety equipment will be provided. Renfrewshire will also be hosting the Scottish Cycling Circuit Championships at Erskine harbour on Saturday 21 August. Cyclists, ranging from under 8s to the fastest adult riders in the country will compete in their respective categories. There will also be a host of entertainment and activities on offer for spectators including internationally renowned stunt riders Danny McAskill and The Clan, plus Real Radio will be on site with a roadshow. There will also be a Scottish Cycling Go-Ride area, information stalls, cycling surgery and activities for children.
Renfrewshire Council and Clyde Muirshiel Country Park are also holding a Sporting Chances event for adults with disabilities on Friday 27 August from 11am until 3pm. The event offers the chance to come and try outdoor activities including kayaking, canoeing, sailing, power boat, cycling, led walks, pond dipping, bat and bird box making.
Participants are welcome to come along on the day. However some activities have limited spaces and should be booked in advance by contacting 0141 847 4999.
The free Walk About A Bit event on Saturday 28 August invites people to take part in a ten mile walk from Paisley to Lochwinnoch. The walk has been divided into approximately two mile sections and people are invited to walk as much as they feel able.
There are staffed water stations along the route and participants can start and leave the walk at any of these points. This event is suitable for all ages and abilities as the route is totally flat. This walk is led by qualified walk leaders and is in partnership with Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.
The Big Active Week culminates with Paisley 10K Road Race, which also includes the 3K Fun Run on Sunday 29 August. Groups entering the 10K will receive a discount with one person going free in every group of five.
