The Cycle to Work scheme is part of the Scottish Government’s Green Transport Plan promoting healthier journeys to work and reducing environmental pollution.
Council employees are encouraged to cycle to work instead of driving by joining the scheme which saves them money on the cost of a new bike and safety accessories via a salary sacrifice agreement allowing them to take advantage of income tax and national insurance deductions.
The scheme is being launched in partnership with Cyclescheme, who have a network of over 1,600 local partner shops across UK, with nearly 20 shops within a 10 mile radius of Paisley.
Renfrewshire Council Leader Derek Mackay said: “This is a great scheme offering the council’s thousands of employees incentives to ditch their cars and cycle to work.
“The council is committed to promoting sustainable travel as well as encouraging healthy, active lifestyles. One way of doing that is to make it easier for staff to cycle to work rather than drive.
“The Cycle to Work scheme is another example of the good work being carried out on the council’s staff travel plan, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of journeys. This has also included the successful introduction of the the Journeyshare scheme last year. Through this staff are encouraged to share car journeys to work with colleagues who live near them. Journeyshare has had a very positive impact and we are confident that the Cycle to Work scheme will do the same.”
