Public meetings take forward Save Clyde Coastguard campaign

Home > Services > Council and government > Council information, performance and statistics > News - release archive

Renfrewshire councillors are giving their backing to the latest phase of the campaign to save the threatened Clyde Coastguard Centre.

The Greenock coastguard base is threatened with closure under proposals to restructure the coastguard service put forward by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The proposal would mean the closure of the Greenock centre, the loss of 35 jobs, and the transfer to Belfast of responsibility for the maritime area - currently safeguarded from Greenock.

The Public and Commercial Services Union is organising two public meetings in support of the campaign to retain the Clyde Coastguard.

The meetings will be held in Glasgow on Tuesday 25 October at 6.30pm at STUC offices in Woodlands Road.

A further meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 26 October in Irvine Town Hall.
