Biodiversity' is a term that describes the variety of life on our planet, and includes:
  • every variety and species of animal, plant and microbe
  • the habitat in which they live (air, land and water), and
  • the interactions between species and habitats.

Since the June 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, it has been widely accepted that local action is needed in every country in the world to reverse significant declines in both species and habitats - and to make sure that the range of biodiversity on the planet doesn't keep declining.

At the Earth Summit, the UK government signed an agreement to conserve, protect and enhance biodiversity. As part of this obligation, councils are working in partnership with official agencies and non-governmental organisations to produce Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs).

Each LBAP aims to use resources effectively through partnership action and to take conservation action for locally identified priority habitats, species and important wildlife sites. The content of the LBAP is guided by national targets but it also seeks to reflect the values of local people and provide a focus for local initiatives.

For Renfrewshire, the LBAP is a partnership initiative between Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Councils and a range of conservation organisations. The plan was launched on 1 April 2004 and includes a range of actions for identified habitats and species which will increase local biodiversity. The LBAP will also be used to raise awareness of biodiversity in the area and to involve everyone including local communities, landowners, scientists, industries and business in the process.

The Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) is a partnership forum which aims to protect and enhance biodiversity. Biodiversity is the biological diversity or the variety of living things. The LBAP launched in 2004 includes 18 Action plans for 7 habitats and 11 species with species groups represented by fungi, plants, fish, birds and mammals.

Since then the LBAP Partnership has been working to achieve actions included in the plan through

Some examples of current Biodiversity Projects

Gleniffer Braes Country Park - Lesser Whitethroat
This project involves the planting of new scrub and
management of existing scrub to improve the habitat
suitability for Lesser Whitethroat.

Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park- Discover Wildlife on Screen
This project involves the installation of cameras to
view wildlife that can be found in the park. One very
special part of this project is to install a camera at an
active Hen Harrier nest, one of our most glamorous
species of conservation concern.

Business & Biodiversity - MEPC - Hillington Park
The Business Park at Hillington have invested £40K
in improving biodiversity on site by changing their
on site management. Areas of grass have been left
to grow allowing wildflowers to bloom and native plants
are now used for landscaping instead of exotic
ornamentals.

Communities & Biodiversity Gleddoch Plantation
Local residents have set up a group called the
Gleddoch Plantation Preservation Group to ensure
the long-term management of the woodland to benefit
biodiversity. They will be installing bird boxes, creating
a path and managing the trees.
