Children and Family Care

The Social Work department has a duty to protect the welfare of children in need. This includes children and young people who:
- are at risk of harm or neglect
- are in trouble with the police
- have additional support needs
- are in our care
- are young carers
- have relationship difficulties with their family
How we can support you
The kind of help we can offer depends on the needs of each child and their family, taking into account their, faith, cultural and social background.
If you or someone else on your behalf, has asked us for help, we need to find out more about your family. This means we need to collect information, discuss this with you and agree what might be done and what services we can offer.
If you are interested in looking after children, either by fostering, adoption or lodgings for a care leaver, we are always looking for suitable people. Please look at the pages on adoption and fostering mentioned in the right hand menu.
Some of the services we provide include:
- children's residential units
- family support
- fostering and adoption
- child protection

The HandsOnScotland website is an on-line resource for anybody working with children and young people. It is a one-stop shop for practical information and techniques on how to respond helpfully to children and young people's troubling behaviour, build up their self-esteem and promote their positive mental well-being. For more information please visit the HandsOnScotland website. The website was commissioned by the Scottish Government through Heads up Scotland and was developed by Playfield Institute (NHS Fife) in partnership with Barnardo's and the University of Dundee.
