Renfrewshire Council takes all reasonable steps to provide maintenance standards on public roads which allow safe movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in all weather conditions. When snow and ice affect the roads they are gritted or salted to a priority schedule as follows:

Snow/Ice Clearance from Roads

a. Principal roads, distributors and main bus routes including, where appropriate access routes to hospitals, ambulance depots, main police stations, fire stations and schools
b. Local distributor roads including those servicing industrial estates, isolated communities or dependent establishments
c. Local access roads within communities and local rural roads
d. Prospective maintainable roads
e. Private roads

Generally, only priorities (a) and (b) will be treated outwith business hours.

Motorways and trunk roads are the responsibility of the Scottish Government. All enquiries/comments should be sent directly to Amey Highways. Phone:0800 085 7136.

Snow/Ice Clearance from Footways and Footpaths

a. Paisley town centre pedestrianised areas
b. Other designated areas of high pedestrian usage, for example, shopping areas, precincts, hospitals, schools
c. Steep hills in urban areas and routes serving dependent establishments
d. All other footways/footpaths

To help local residents keep their own paths and driveways clear we operate a free salt uplift facility (max 10kg each) from our depot at 25 Scotts Road, Paisley. To make use of this facility please don't forget to bring your own bucket!!

A new 15 metre high, dome-shaped salt barn has opened at the Scotts Road depot in Paisley this will allow for a more environmentally friendly, cost effective winter gritting service for Renfrewshire.

Grit Bins

Grit bins are provided by the Council supplement to the use of gritters. Grit bins will be placed where local conditions meet the Council guidelines as regards location, geometry and usage.
