The Wallace Memorial in Elderslie
Elderslie lies between Paisley and Johnstone. Nowadays it is a pleasant residential area though it has had an industrial past. Facilities in the village include a fine golf course, with wonderful views across the Clyde Valley to Ben Lomond and the Campsie Fells, the Wallace Bowling Club, and Elderslie swimming pool, which has a 25 metre pool, sauna and dance studio.

Elderslie is celebrated as the birthplace of Scotland's hero of the Wars of Independence, William Wallace. On the traditional site of his home is a memorial erected in 1912. It has a series of sculpted plaques around a column reminiscent of a medieval market cross. The plaques illustrate the key moments in Wallace's career.

The memorial is adjacent to the Wallace Yew and the foundations of the 17th century farmhouse known locally as Wallace's House. For more information on William Wallace and the Elderslie connection, email pt@renfrewshire.gov.uk and ask for the booklet 'Wallace, Elderslie's Son'.

There are some lovely walks in the countryside around the village, including the Brandy Burn Way, which links Johnstone with Gleniffer Braes Country Park. For details of this and other walks around Renfrewshire contact the department of Planning and Transport (as above) and ask for 'OUT There, 10 Walks around Renfrewshire'.
