Sheltered housing:

This is the name given to a type of housing designed to meet the needs of older people. It appeals to people who can live independently but who want the reassurance of knowing that help is available if needed. Sheltered housing developments are often made up of 15 to 40 self-contained flats or bungalows.

The house design is based on the standards for general needs housing but with the following additional features:

• housing is at ground or first floor level, or in blocks over two storeys high served by at least one lift
• handrails are usually provided on common access stairs and passages
• bathroom doors are either sliding or opening outwards and fitted with locks which work from the outside. Bathroom floors usually have a non-slip finish and handrails are often fitted beside the WC and bath or shower
• light switches are lowered and socket outlets are raised
• a warden service is often provided with an emergency alarm system to call help in an emergency

Many developments also include shared facilities such as a lounge or laundry.

Very sheltered housing:

This is sometimes known as 'care' and 'extra care' housing and generally has all the features of sheltered housing. However, residents are also provided with a greater level of care and support through additional warden cover, care in the home and with meals. Very sheltered housing is for residents who are frail or ill and need extra support.

You must have a current application for housing with Renfrewshire Council, before you can be considered for a Council sheltered house.
