Contents insurance for council tenants
Many council tenants wrongly believe that the council automatically insures their household goods, belongings and decoration against damage.
Unfortunately, some tenants only realise this is not the case after the damage has been done. Furniture and personal belongings are lost and, without insurance, tenants might not be able to replace their possessions.
We strongly advise all Council tenants to take out household contents insurance to protect possessions from loss or damage.
Your policy should include a redecoration allowance, and cover for freezer contents, and it should clearly state your legal liabilities.
Council Home Contents Insurance Scheme
Council tenants can arrange insurance directly through an insurer or broker, or you can join the council's household contents scheme. Joining the council scheme is easy. Weekly payments start at only 75 pence a week (for £9,000 worth of contents cover), 50 pence a week for pensioners (for £6,000 worth of contents cover), and payments can be made with your rent.
Unlike some insurance policies, the council scheme has no 'excess clause'. This means you don't need to pay the first part of any claim. Please see the attached leaflet for further information about the policy offered. You must however be a Renfrewshire Council tenant to join the scheme.
With the council scheme, premiums are paid each month or week along with your rent. However, your rent account has to stay up-to-date for the policy to remain valid.
If you want to join the scheme or would like more information, fill in the following online form or call at any of our Neighbourhood Offices.
