The National Waste Plan (Scotland) published in 2003 sets the direction of the Scottish Government's policies for sustainable waste management from 2003 to 2020. It is built around a major funding commitment by the Scottish Government to transform and significantly improve Scotland's historically poor record of waste reduction, recycling, composting and recovery. The Scottish Government has set a target of 25% recycling and composting by 2006, and a further target of 30% recycling and composting by 2008.

Renfrewshire Council received funding of £28.5 million from theScottish Government's 'Strategic Waste Fund' to support short and medium term improvements in recycling and composting.

During 2005/06 a range of recycling services were introduced across Renfrewshire:

Continuous Improvement

In the short term, it will be our priority to find practical solutions to allow households who have an alternative waste collection service, such as sack collections, to participate in recycling. It is hoped that in the near future we can provide all of our residents with a flexible and convenient recycling service.

Future

All of these recycling initiatives will form the basis of an 'Integrated Waste Management Plan'. Renfrewshire Council will consider new initiatives, use new technologies and through continued consultation make sure that the people of Renfrewshire are part of the solution in addressing the way we deal with waste.

It is hoped that all of this activity will make the communities of Renfrewshire waste aware and develop sustainable waste practices in future.
