Brown bin vehicles
Normally, brown bins are emptied using a refuse collection vehicle (RCV) called a Rotopress. This has a revolving drum which mixes the organic waste to allow it to be composted more easily. The collected material is taken to a reprocessing facility.

Maintenance and advice for your brown bin
- Your brown bin will be collected every 2 weeks, on the same day as your blue bin. (between Spring and Autumn)
- Your bin should be on the pavement no later than 7.00 am on the day of collection.
- You should wheel the container to the pavement in front of your home, nearest to where the collection vehicle stops. Please leave the bin with the handles facing towards the roadway and keep the pavement clear for users.
- Only the contents of the container will be emptied. The lid must be closed.
- Bins which are considered too heavy for the lifting equipment will not be uplifted. If bins are too heavy, they may break the bin lifters or cause the bin to be damaged.
- Bins should be able to move freely from the collection point.
- Any bin which is considered to be contaminated cannot be lifted by our crews until the items causing the contamination are removed.
- As soon as possible after your bin has been emptied you should return it to your property. You should not permanently store your bin on the pavement.
- Damaged containers should be reported by the householder.
- Cleanliness of the bin is the responsibility of the householder.
Contamination
Our contractor enforces fixed penalties for contaminated material. Because of this, the council have to be strict about contamination. Emptying one contaminated bin spoils the efforts of other householders who take part in the recycling scheme.
