Enforcement policy

Renfrewshire council is responsible for health and safety enforcement in certain types of premises in terms the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. These premises include:

• offices
• shops
• warehouses
• leisure facilities
• hotels
• catering premises.

Section 18(4) the 1974 Act requires councils to carry out their duties under the Act as guided by the Health and Safety Commission. This guidance is compulsory. The Commission requires the council to have:

• a clear and published statement of its enforcement policy and practice
• a prioritised, planned, inspection programme
• a service plan for the enforcement of health and safety.
