What is the 'Active Schools' project?
It is designed to motivate young people to be active, healthy and to adopt a healthy lifestyle into adulthood.
In February 2003, Active Schools was identified as a key element of the Scottish Government's drive to get more Scots more active. The Scottish Government has since developed a range of partnerships and tasks to take this work forward. A fundamental aim of Active Schools is to give school-aged children the tools, motivation and opportunities to be more active and for these opportunities to be available before, during and after school, and in the wider community.
Renfrewshire Active Schools
This is a partnership driven initiative between Sportscotland and Renfrewshire Council's education and leisure department. A team have been appointed with responsibility to put in place and drive forward a range of planned activities in both school and community settings. The objectives of the initiative are:
- to increase physical activity levels among school-aged children in general with a focus on girls, women, young people from ethnic minority backgrounds, young people with physical and learning disabilities, and young people in areas of socio-economic disadvantage
- to improve the motivation and attitude of children and young people and to help increase their achievement potential within school and community life
- to increase levels of sports participation in both formal and informal community settings
- to increase the numbers of young people acting as sports leaders, coaches and volunteers in community settings
