Justices of the Peace (JPs) are volunteers from all walks of life who deal with criminal matters in the district court such as:

The JP sits with a legally qualified clerk on the court bench to hear criminal business. JPs can also sign warrants and certain official papers (such as passport applications) for members of the public.

Since 2007, local councillors can also sign and witness some official papers. However, unlike JPs, local councillors cannot sign warrants.

A Justice of the Peace is available on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the District Court in Paisley. If you want to see a JP, please contact the court reception desk before 9.30 a.m.
