Sell yourself through your CV

Whether you've just started looking for work or have been hunting for a little while, it's useful to think about what you can do to make sure you stand out from the crowd.

Make sure your CV is as good as it can be as this will help you sell your skills and experience to potential employers. A good CV will help you stand out from other applicants and can significantly improve your chances of being shortlisted.

Careers Scotland provides a handy online CV Builder that takes you through the development of a CV.

DirectGov also has some good advice to help you write your CV as well as a handy guide to help you prepare for your job interview.

Benefits and income tax advice

The benefits system provides help and financial support to those who are unemployed or looking for work. It also provides you with additional income when your earnings are low, if you are bringing up children, are retired, care for someone, are ill or have a disability.

Visit DirectGov to find out more about the benefits system and what your personal entitlement is.

Most people will pay income tax on their earnings, which allows the government to pay for our public services including health care and education. When you accept a job offer you will be given a tax code by your employer, which will determine how much tax is deducted from your pay.

Find out more about income tax and how much you will pay by visiting the Inland Revenue website.
