Introduction
In Renfrewshire, business premises are inspected to make sure that they are safe for employees to work in and for the public to visit. The inspection work is split between two agencies: the council's environmental services department inspect Renfrewshire's offices, shops and warehouses and the Health and Safety Executive inspect premises such as factories and building sites.
Offices, shops and warehouses
Environmental services health and safety team inspection brief covers approximately 2,300 commercial premises within Renfrewshire. These premises provide work for approximately 10,000 people.
Their programme of work includes:
- carrying out inspections of workplaces to promote good practice and make sure that businesses comply with health and safety law
- providing advice and guidance on health, safety and employment law matters to stakeholders, including employers, employees, the self-employed and members of the public
- investigating notified cases of work related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences
- investigating workplace complaints and incidents
- training, providing information and promotional work to raise awareness on a wide range of health and safety topics
- developing relationships with other organisations with an interest in health and safety.
