Renfrewshire Council

Local Code of Corporate Governance

Corporate Governance is the name given to the system by which Councils direct and control their functions. It is about ensuring that councils do the right things, in the right way, for the right people, in a timely, inclusive, open, honest and accountable manner.

Delivering Good Governance in Local Government Framework, published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, sets out the standard for local authority governance in the UK and places greater emphasis on relationships and behaviours between elected members and senior management; performance reporting; and council and service level plans.

The code reflects the increased importance placed by the Council on self-assessment and activities involving greater scrutiny of services. It also links to the Best Value criteria where governance and accountability are key elements against which the Council is assessed.
