Houston PS - Euroquiz winner of Renfrewshire Heats 2018

Houston Primary team wins Euroquiz Renfrewshire heat

Houston Primary School has been crowned the winner of the Renfrewshire heat of the 2018 Euroquiz final, winning from a field of 14 local schools.

The team of four students (Ishan Ghosh-Ray, Alannah Pollock, Eva Graham and Owen Hutchieson) will now head to the Scottish Parliament in May to compete in the finals, after a final round that saw them defeat Paisley's St Mary's Primary in an 11-5 victory.

The annual Euroquiz competition is run by the Scottish European Educational Trust and sees P6 pupils across Scotland forming teams of four who work together to broaden their knowledge of Europe.

Heats take place in local authorities from January to March.

In the heats, students compete in four rounds: Geography (15 questions), Languages (10 questions), Understanding Europe (15 questions) and Culture, History and Sport (20 questions).

The top two teams progress to a final compilation round to determine the local winner.

Education and Children's Services Convener, Councillor Jim Paterson said:

"Congratulations to all 14 participating teams for their commitment to developing their knowledge of all things European in the lead up to Euroquiz.

"The Scottish European Educational Trust commented that this was one of the closest run heats ever seen in Euroquiz and this is a real tribute to the students and their teachers.

"I look forward to seeing Renfrewshire being represented by Houston Primary School in the finals later this year and I am sure they will do us proud."
