Fares for Veterans

A fantastic service for our veterans

I was fortunate enough to spend a morning with David Gibson from the charity Fares4Free, which provides free taxi journeys to veterans to allow them to attend appointments they may otherwise miss if they do not have someone to accompany them.

Many of the organisations that Fares4Free work with provide befriending services, grants and assistance to veterans, but they may not always be able to access them without assistance.

Through the charity, drivers from local taxi firms donate four journeys per month for free to assist veterans getting to their appointments, with the vehicles often staffed by ex-service personnel.

It's an inspiring use of community spirit and there aren't enough ways to thank volunteers like David and the rest of the team at Fares4Free for what they do to help our veterans.

The sacrifices our Armed Forces make to ensure we can live our lives in peace are immeasurable.

Our Remembrance Services held recently offer a chance for everyone to pay their respects to those who have been lost in the line of duty and pay tribute to their bravery.

The attendance from veterans across the Armed Forces is always humbling and I felt privileged to be a part of the service alongside them.

However it has to be recognised that not all veterans find life easy when returning from service.

Around 10-12% of rough sleepers in the United Kingdom are veterans of the British Armed Forces and many suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which can make daily life difficult to deal with.

This is why charities such as Fares4Free can make such a difference to the lives of those who may be facing struggles since leaving the Armed Forces.
