Nursery children get digging for their new early learning centre

Young children aged three and four years-old were the first to break ground as work starts on site to build their new nursery.

Beth, Annie and Isla, aged four, and Leo and Jess, aged three, from Houston Early Learning and Childcare Class, helped contractors Fleming Buildings Limited start work on their new nursery.

It's being built beside Houston Primary School and is one of four new nurseries being built across the area to give our children the best start in life.

What's happening?

Fleming Buildings Limited are constructing four new-build nurseries in Dargavel in Bishopton, Houston, Lochfield in Paisley and Kirklandneuk in Renfrew.

Houston Early Learning and Childcare Class is the only nursery of the four to replace an existing early years building.

The sites are now being dug up to start work on building the new nursery centres and classes.

Work will also start soon on major extensions for St Margaret's Early Learning and Childcare Class, Kilbarchan Community Nursery and a bespoke centre for Inchinnan Community Nursery at Inchinnan Primary School.

The projects are part of a £14million extension and refurbishment programme to support the expansion of nursery provision in Renfrewshire.

Why are you building new nurseries?

These new and refurbished nurseries will help us provide the best possible learning environments for young children and give them the best possible start in life.

Renfrewshire was recognised for its efforts to close the poverty-related attainment gap in 2019 when it became the first local authority in Scotland to be rated 'excellent' by Education Scotland. The early learning and childcare expansion will support much of that work.

It will also help us meet the Scottish Government's target of 1140 fully funded hours of early learning and childcare for all three and four-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds by August 2020.

I need to apply for a nursery place. Can I still do that?

You can still apply for a nursery place using 1140 hours of early learning and childcare from August 2020. Visit our nursery applications webpage, download the form and send it into your local nursery.

If you need more information before you apply, check out our frequently asked questions or call your local nursery.

What's next?

We will shortly be recruiting for more positions in our early learning and childcare classes and centres across the area. Keep an eye out for those on MyJobScotland and our social channels.

In April, we plan to confirm the nursery placements for each child that we have an application form for. We will be looking at these applications in March through our admissions panel process. For applications received after this first panel, we will hold additional panels as required.
